Snoop Dogg on Tim Westwood

May 25, 2011

Yeah, I’ve been MIA, sorry.  The good news is this interview/freestyle session with the big Snoop D-O-double-G is thoroughly amusing. The Doggfather talks Detox and what the good doctor needs to do to get the album out in a timely fashion.

Infinite Hip-Hop’s Guide to Recent Albums

March 31, 2011

There has been a lot of good hip-hop lately and I’ve been to busy keep up with it all!  Here’s is a brief guide 5 of the most recent hip-hop albums:

Lupe Fiasco – Lasers

After a three year delay and long battle with his record company, Lupe Fiasco finally dropped his third album Lasers. Although the fingerprints of record label CEO are all over this project, Lupe still manages to put together an impressive display of lyricism which, despite the clear cooperate influences, manages to stay nearly true to his vision despite his confines.  Lupe was quoted as saying he “both hates and loves Lasers” and its very clear why. With an artist as talented as Lupe Fiasco, its a shame when record execs decide they know  better better than their artists what good hip-hop is.

4/5

Favorite Song – State Run Radio:

Travis Barker – Give the Drummer Some

Travis Barker, the drummer from blink 182, may seem like an odd person to release a hip-hop album but his may very well be the best on this entire list. The album is a compilation with nearly every major hip-hop rapper and producer currently hot in the game.  And if you’ve ever heard one of Travis Barker’s past hip-hop remix the outcome of this album should be predictably awesome. Although I had high expectations, Give the Drummer Some really went above and beyond anything I had hoped for.  It is one of the better hip-hop albums that has come out in the recent past.

4.75/5

This was seriously a hard decision to make there are so many good tracks on this CD.

Favorite Song – If You Want To (feat. Pharrell Williams & Lupe Fiasco):

Favorite Song 2 – Let’s Go (featuring Yelawolf, Twista, Busta Rhymes & Lil Jon)

Wiz Khalifa – Rolling Papers

Wiz Khalifa was catapulted into the public sphere at the end of last year with his platinum single “Black & Yellow”.  While Lupe battled with his record company to stick with his artistic vision, Wiz quickly and quietly signed his contract and sold his soul.  It’s really fuckin’ obvious. Nearly every aspect of this album sounds like  generic mainstream pop-rap. Never is it more obvious than the second single Roll Up where Khalifa monotonously sing-raps in what more closely resembles Rebecca Black’s newest single than hip-hop.  Die-hard Wiz Khalifa fans will buy this album but others should save their money.

2.25/5

Favorite Song –  One My Level (feat. Too $hort)

Least Favorite Song – Roll Up:

Pharoahe Monch – W.A.R. (We Are Renegades)

I’ve never listened to much Pharoahe Monch but I know he’s supposed to be good and listening to his most recent album that is exactly how I’d label him. Now I’ve only listened to this album a few times so I’m going to hold off on a longer review but definitely an artist that has peaked my interest.

(Tentatively) 3.75/5

(One of my) Favorite Song – Assassins Ft. Jean Grae And Royce Da 5’9′

Snoop Dogg – The Doggumentary

In The Doggumentary, Snoop returns to his G-Funk roots as he  “fuck[s] around and bring it back to classic Snoop”. Maybe its the recent death of G-Funk Legend Nate Dogg or the new direction that Dr. Dre is taking with Detox…or the fact that I’ve been craving  more of the type music that got me into hip-hop but something about this album really resonates with me.  While steering away from the mainstream sound he went for Malice in Wonderland, Snoop instead employs the assistance of the hip-hop greatest which helped him craft the sound which he  godfathered nearly twenty years ago such as  Devin The Dude, Too $hort, E-40, R. Kelly and John Legend.

Favorite Song – Eyez Closed (feat. Kanye West & John Legend)

Travis Barker ft. Pharrell & Lupe Fiasco – “If You Want To”

March 9, 2011

This track is off Travis Barker’s star studded solo debut album Give the Drummer Some. The song is really sick, I feel like this is what Lazers should have been.

The full tracklist  album  below (after the jump) features nearly every big name in hip-hop including Wayne, Rick Ross, Swizz Beatz, Game, Pharrell, Lupe Fiasco, RZA, Raekwon, Snoop Dogg, Ludacris, E-40, Slaughterhouse, Yelawolf, Twista, Busta Rhymes, Lil Jon, Kid Cudi, Tech N9Ne, Bun B, Beanie Sigel and Cypress Hill.  If the rest of the songs are as good as this one, which seems very possible, this album should be amazing.

If You Want To (Feat. Pharrell & Lupe Fiasco):

Snoop Dogg wants some Charlie Sheen

March 7, 2011

Unless you’ve been under a rock for the past few weeks you’ve probably heard that Charlie Sheen is going crazy.  In one of his other interviews he was quoted as saying something along the lines of “When cocaine wants to party it does Charlie Sheen” Apparently Snoop Dogg wants to party with cocaine.
